12NovMoore to shoot sequel to Fahrenheit 9/11

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Michael Moore plans a follow-up to “Fahrenheit 9/11,” his hit documentary that assails President Bush over the handling of the September 11 attacks and the war on terrorism, according to a Hollywood trade paper.

Moore told Daily Variety that he and Harvey Weinstein, the Miramax boss who produced the film, hope to have “Fahrenheit 9/11 1/2″ ready in two to three years.

“Fifty-one percent of the American people lacked information (in this election) and we want to educate and enlighten them,” Moore was quoted in Thursday’s edition of Variety. “They weren’t told the truth. We’re communicators and it’s up to us to start doing it now.”

A spokesman for Fellowship Adventure Group, formed by Weinstein and brother Bob to help distribute “Fahrenheit 9/11,” did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

“Fahrenheit 9/11,” which won top honors at May’s Cannes Film Festival, became the first documentary to top $100 million at the domestic box office. Moore, who won the documentary Academy Award for “Bowling for Columbine,” is pushing “Fahrenheit 9/11″ in the best-picture category for the upcoming Oscars.

The issues for the follow-up film will remain the same, Iraq and terrorism, Moore said.

“The official mourning period is over today and there is a silver lining: George W. Bush is prohibited by law from running again,” Moore said.

19OctProSieben is showing Fahrenheit 9/11 on TV in Germany (for free)

Fahrenheit 911 for free

WooHoo.
It’s airing on November 1.

Freedom of speech and expression in a country that at least tries to uphold what it preaches (unlike some other countries that shall remain nameless in this post).

It’ll be unedited and undubbed (movies here usually get dubbed in German). The full shabaam. I just saw the trailer for the airing on that channel. They had Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (Oh Fortuna) running over the scenes from the movie with Bush getting on his make-up and crackin’ jokes before making a now famous speech.

08OctProsecutor: Underwear not worth court time

Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick refused to press charges against filmmaker Michael Moore Wednesday for “alleged inducements” to get students to vote at his Sept. 27 speech.

The Michigan Republican Party called on Burdick and the prosecutors of three other counties Tuesday to press charges against Moore for offering college students Ramen noodles and underwear in exchange for their promise to vote.

Burdick wrote Greg McNeilly, executive director of the state Republican Party, Wednesday and stated his rationale for “respectfully declining” to file charges against Moore.

“I have to utilize my discretion in what cases to handle, and in that regard I choose to devote our resources to prosecuting those who are delivering cocaine to our young people rather than underwear,” Burdick wrote.

Prosecutors in Antrim, Ingham and Wayne Counties also declined to press charges, The Associated Press reported Thursday.

Michigan Democratic Party Communications Director Jason Moon said state Republicans are attempting to gain publicity from alleging Moore illegally bribed students for their votes.

“We think it’s ridiculous and obvious the county prosecutors have far more things to worry about than (the Republicans’) ridiculous lawsuit,” Moon said.

During Moore’s Sept. 27 speech in Rose Arena, he invited unregistered student voters on stage to receive a prize of Ramen noodles or underwear in exchange for their promise to register to vote.

The Michigan native’s stop at CMU was part of a 60-city tour of college campuses Moore called his “Slacker Uprising Tour”.

Moore did not tell students when he gave them the gifts they had to vote or choose Democrat John Kerry for president, contrary to the state party’s allegations.

In Burdick’s letter to McNeilly, he asked the state’s top Republican whether a jury would be convinced students’ votes were influenced by Ramen noodles, “a staple in their diet.”

“I think most jurors would consider his actions as simply an extension of his ‘pitch’ for young people to vote,” Burdick said.

Moore responded to the Republican Party’s criminal complaint on his Web site, www.michaelmoore.com, and said the GOP has “run out of ideas”.

“It’s ironic that Republicans have no problem with allowing assault weapons out on our streets, yet they don’t want to put clean underwear in the hands of our slacker youth,” Moore said in a statement. “I may soon be a wanted man in Michigan - simply because I convinced a few slackers to change their underwear and eat a healthy meal of artificially flavored noodles.”

Burdick, a Republican, said he did not intend his letter to be disrespectful.

Randall Thompson, a spokesman for Attorney General Mike Cox, told the AP Cox’s office would consider the issue only if a complaint was forwarded from the secretary of state’s office.

State Republican Party spokesman Chris Paolino did not return calls for comment.

07Sep"Fahrenheit" bows out of Oscar documentary race

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Filmmaker Michael Moore says he is willing to give up a chance to compete in the Oscar race for best documentary with his anti-Bush movie “Fahrenheit 9/11″ in order to have it shown on television before the U.S. presidential election in November.

Under rules established by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, documentaries shown on television within nine months of their theatrical release are ineligible for the documentary Oscar.

In a message posted on Monday on his Web site, Moore said distributors will instead enter “Fahrenheit 9/11″ in the Oscar contest for best picture, which does not have the same rules on television showings. No documentary film has ever been nominated for the Academy’s top prize.

But some Oscar watchers have speculated that keeping “Fahrenheit 9/11,” a scathing commentary on Bush’s conduct of the war in Iraq, out of the running for best documentary may help its chances to be nominated in the coveted best picture category.

“If there is even the remotest of chances that I can get this film seen by a few million more Americans before election day, then that is more important to me than winning another documentary Oscar,” Moore said in a statement.

Moore said that the distributor for his film’s upcoming DVD release, set for October 5, would be unlikely to allow it to be shown on TV, presumably for fear of diminishing its value in the home-video market.

But the filmmaker said he remained determined to arrange for a TV debut of the film before the U.S. presidential election in November in hopes that wider exposure of his blistering critique of President George W. Bush would help defeat him at the polls.

Moore won the Academy Award for best feature documentary in 2003 for his study of gun violence in America, “Bowling for Columbine.”

“Fahrenheit” already has grossed more than $116 million (65 million pounds) at the U.S. box office, making it the most commercially successful regular-format documentary of all time. Only giant-screen Imax documentaries have generated greater ticket sales.

Filmmakers and producers submit their work for Academy Award consideration, but nominations and awards are based on votes of Academy members.

PS:Reuters is one of only a few news providers that attempted to report this story as it actually was without implying a greedy will on the part of Michael Moore in the Best Picture nomination.
Quote from MichaelMoore.com (The only place on the website where the “Best Picture” nomination is mentioned):

…I have informed our distributors of my decision. They support me (in fact, they then offered to submit our film for all the other categories it is eligible for, including Best Picture — so, hey, who knows, maybe I’ll get to complete that Oscar speech from 2003! Sorry, just kidding)…
