If you’re wondering how your website will look like on the upcoming iPad, here’s a very easy way to find out if your layout will work on the 1024×768 / 768×1024 screen.
Fire up Safari and enter the following snippets in the address bar. You can also drag the bookmarklets below to your bookmark bar and click on them from there:
iPad in Landscape mode:
javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(1024,768); (Bookmarklet: 1024×768)
iPad in Portrait more:
javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(768,1024); (Bookmarklet: 768×1024)
Easy as Pi. Have fun.
(PS, code only works when Safari only has 1 tab open)
In the not so distant future, you’ll be able to take control of your computer at home from your iPad anywhere in the world. This is basically thanks to a combination of WiFi/3G and RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) apps.
Obviously, to see what Windows 7 would look like on an Apple iPad I had to Photoshop the image below, but I did make sure it was proportionality correct. The screenshot was taken by setting my resolution to 1024×768 and rotating my screen to get the correct size and aspect ratio. The screen width in portrait mode was noticeably narrower than I was used to in Windows, but still workable.
Now, imagine what this could mean for you in your office. Citrix already has its Receiver ported to iPad meaning if your desk job involves using thin clients, this could be your independence from your desk.
Chaos theory has a bad name, conjuring up images of unpredictable weather, economic crashes and science gone wrong. But there is a fascinating and hidden side to Chaos, one that scientists are only now beginning to understand. It turns out that chaos theory answers a question that mankind has asked for millennia – How did we get here?
In this documentary, Professor Jim Al-Khalili sets out to uncover one of the great mysteries of science – how does a universe that starts off as dust end up with intelligent life? How does order emerge from disorder? It’s a mindbending, counterintuitive and for many people a deeply troubling idea. But Professor Al-Khalili reveals the science behind much of beauty and structure in the natural world and discovers that far from it being magic or an act of God, it is in fact an intrinsic part of the laws of physics. Amazingly, it turns out that the mathematics of chaos can explain how and why the universe creates exquisite order and pattern. The natural world is full of awe-inspiring examples of the way nature transforms simplicity into complexity. From trees to clouds to humans – after watching this film you’ll never be able to look at the world in the same way again.
