25FebDocument This

Yesterday I dropped by my local Stuff-You-Could-Get-For-Free-But-You-Pay-For-Here store and bought me Metallica – Some Kind Of Monster, Super Size Me and some other stuff I also could’ve gotten for free online.

Some Kind Of Monster was surprising. The movie starts out as what one would expect, namely a promo DVD for an album, a “making of” or some other material you sometimes get for free along with a music CD or is sent off to MTV for promotional purposes, but due to circumstances and events that took place, it evolved into a full fledged documentary, not only about Metallica but about their demons, insecurities and the issues they face.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the band as individuals who are in a band rather than just Metallica Rock Stars and was impressed by how open and honest they were in showing their personal sides.

There are also bits and pieces of info on the Lars Ulrich vs. Napster case in both the movie and on the second DVD.

In my opinion, Lars is still has some major inferiority complex issues.

I still haven’t finished watching the extras on the second DVD (it’s more than seven hours long cut down from 1600 hours of footage). Most of the clips on it are definitely worth watching. Especially “James on growing up” and “Kirk goes to driving school”.

Metallica – Some Kind Of Monster was worth its money. I have a whole new level of respect for these guys, their talents and the music they make.

09FebStar Trek Enterprise, Cancelled

Goddamnit! After Futurama, the only thing that came close to an American culteral heritage and a universal institution, has been cancelled!

Neglecting to promote the show since its start in 2001, UPN (a.k.a The African American Channel) decided to cancel the show citing poor ratings (oh, DUH!) and the realization that Enterprise didn’t “fit their format” as one insider put it.

Star Trek is a multi-million dollar business that generates money through not only through on-air advertisement, merchandising and DVD sales but also with the licensing of the shows to networks all over the world. It is NOT a US-only product and UPN ratings had nothing to do with Enterprise’s cancellation. It was the direct will and influence of Paramount execs that got it cancelled.

Rod Roddenberry, son of the late Gene Roddenberry had visited the Paramount lot just one day before the cancellation announcement.
“My immediate response is that you (Paramount) did it to yourselves, and it was a long time coming. But then I sit down and look within, and there’s really an emptiness there for me, and an immediate fear. I can’t imagine how the people who work on the show, who have been pouring their heart and soul into it for the last 18 years, are feeling right now.

I don’t think this is a nail in the coffin, no way. Star Trek will come back. There’s no doubt. I don’t know when, maybe five, 10 or 15 years, but it will come back.

But right now it needs a break. I think I only say that because it has been sort of the same thing for 18 years. Maybe if they kept it fresh and exciting the whole time, it wouldn’t need a break. I just can’t imagine another spin-off series like ‘Starfleet Academy’ or something, where they would have the same thing, new characters, different uniforms, maybe a different ship, but still deal with the same shit.”
